This recipe is our family favorite. It is very moist and easy to make. Once you have tasted the homemade German Frosting, you will never buy prepared frosting again!
Beat together until light and thick (about 30 seconds)
- ½ cup soft butter (or 2/3 cup shortening)
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 3 eggs
Add and beat a few seconds:
- 1 ¾ cups buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Add and mix well on medium high speed - about 1 minute:
- 2 cups all-purpose white flour (this should be decreased 1 - 4 Tablespoons for low altitudes)
- 1/3 cup cocoa
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon soda (increase a little for low altitudes)
Pour batter into a 9”x 13” cake pan that has been greased and
floured. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 45 minutes (or 2 - 9” round cake pans for approximately
30 minutes) or until it tests done. Remove from
oven and let cool for 10 minutes. Place a cooling rack on top and turn
pan upside down. Lift
pan off and allow to cake finish cooling. Carefully turn cake right side up by placing desired cake plate on top and turning over.
Note: This recipe is for high altitudes - adjustments are listed for low altitudes.
Frost as desired or top with:

Stir together with whisk in a small sauce pan:
Boil on low heat for about 8 minutes stirring often. Set aside to cool or place pan in ice water until cool and thick.Homemade German Cake Frosting: (posted below):

- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup evaporated milk (or 1/2 and 1/2)
- 3 egg yolks
- 2 Tablespoons butter
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
Add to above mixture and stir:
- 1 cup unsweetened coconut (shredded or flakes)
- 2/3 cup pecan pieces
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
